Formed in 1932, following the amalgamation of Tooting Town and Mitcham Wanderers, Tooting & Mitcham United F C were originally based at Sandy Lane. The team's distinctive black and white striped kit was adopted in 1956.
The late 1950s was highly successful for the Club - it won two Isthmian League championship titles, plus the Surrey Senior Cup and the London Senior Cup. New goalkeeper, Alex Stepney, also proved a star player.
This picture shows a 1958/9 highlight, when Tooting & Mitcham beat Horsham 2:0 in their F A Cup qualifier. They went on to beat Bournemouth and Northampton Town in the First and Second rounds, then faced the mighty Nottingham Forest in the Third Round. Home fans were ecstatic when the Mitcham side managed a 2:2 draw but sadly they lost the replay 3:0 and Forest went on to win the Cup.
