There's More to Morden
What links Roman roadbuilding, Victorian snuff millers, the London Underground, a pioneering housing estate, music stars and the largest mosque in Western Europe?
The answer is that they all feature in the rich and varied history of Morden. There is far more to this bustling Merton district than meets the eye and work is under way to ensure that Morden's colourful past is celebrated.
A New Community Project.
Merton Heritage Service has been awarded £35,000 from the Neighbourhood Fund for There's More to Morden, a new one year project designed to raise awareness of the history of Morden town centre and the Merton Park ward.
This project will engage the community with over a century of local heritage, highlighting the people, places and events that have shaped this area of Merton. Working with local residents, shops and community groups, we will create themed displays around Morden town centre, stage external exhibitions in local parks and devise a series of heritage trails linking the high street with residential areas and green spaces. An augmented reality app will also be used to bring historic imagery of the area to life.
What are the aims of this project?
- To increase public awareness of local heritage
- To raise the profile of Morden town centre and celebrate its unique character
- To attract footfall to the town centre and support the local economy
- To provide learning and leisure opportunities for local people
- To promote an active lifestyle through guided or independent walking
Volunteering Opportunities:
Local people will be key to the success of this project and we are looking for volunteers of all ages to join our friendly team. We have a variety of work available including:
- Local history research
- Recording interviews
- Devising heritage trails
- Leading guided walks
