Mitcham's historic Cricket Club has nurtured generations of local, county and England players.

Alf Turnbull (pictured) was a natural ball player, a very capable wicket keeper and a good batsman. A regular member of the Mitcham 1st XI (1952-3 and 1955-6), he was Club captain 1956-9. During these three seasons the local team had 42 wins and just 12 losses. Alf was also skipper in 1963 and later served as Club chairman and Vice-President.

Renowned for encouraging cricketing talent, Alf introduced the Colts training scheme to Mitcham Cricket Club and together with Arthur Stainforth, Club Captain of the 2nd XI, he developed the skills of many young and promising players.
