Notes / History | Mitcham boasts one of the oldest cricket pitches in the world, second only to Hambledon. The original Cricketers inn functioned as an early clubhouse for the local team and score records were kept from the pub balcony. At various points in it’s history, the pub has also been managed by former cricketers, including the Victorian bowler, James Southerton. Enemy bombing during the Second World War left the original pub in ruins and the replacement structure was not completed until 1958. In subsequent decades, the pub has always displayed a sign showing cricketers at play. |
