Notes / History | The 1980s witnessed the second dawn of the computer age, as companies like IBM, Microsoft and Apple MacIntosh designed faster, smaller and more user friendly computers for the home and office. Merton firms were also involved with new developments, for instance in 1983 Fry's Diecasting won a £750,000 contract to produce the Rank Xerox 1045 mainframe computer. Local workers cast the necessary components, which were then shipped to Venray in Holland for assembly. Since 1998, much of this area has been redeveloped and now forms the Tandem Retail Park. |
