Notes / History Park Place, near Commonside West, Mitcham, dates from the late 18th century, and is situated adjacent to the Canons House. Known also as "Almonds" in the early part of the 19th century, it was one of a number of houses owned by the Cranmer family who, with their relatives, the Simpsons, owned the manor of Mitcham Canons for over 250 years. The house was rarely lived in by the family but leased to various tenants.

Park Place was used for a variety of charitable functions, organised by William Simpson, Lord of the Manor, from 1828 until 1860.

The property remained in the family until 1922 when it was sold to the News of the World and the estate was developed and maintained as a sports ground for the next 32 years.
