Notes / History | Park Place, near Commonside West, Mitcham, dates from the late 18th century and is situated adjacent to the Canons House. In the early part of the 19th century the house was also known as "Almonds". Originally the house was situated in parkland with a documented history back to the 14th Century. It was one of a number of houses owned by the Cranmer family who, with their relatives, the Simpsons, owned the manor of Mitcham Canons for over 250 years. The house was rarely lived in by the family but leased to various tenants. Park Place was used for a variety of charitable functions, organised by William Simpson, Lord of the Manor, from 1828 until 1860. The property passed down through the family until 1922 when it was sold to the News of the World. For a brief interwar period the building housed the headquarters of the Mitcham Athletic Club. |
