Notes / History | Built c.1810, this house replaced the original Morden Lodge built for ill-fated Jewish financier Abraham Goldsmid. (Having paid vast sums to support the British war against Napoleon, Goldsmid became convinced (wrongly) that the Government would default on the loans. Fearing financial ruin, he committed suicide and his home was later demolished.) In 1859 the property shown here was briefly home to army colonel, Daniel Lysons, hero of the Crimean War. His son, Henry, also went on to have a distinguished military career. In 1882 Henry was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions in halting an enemy attack on British forces during the Zulu war of 1879. |
