Notes / History | In an attempt to prevent the Suffragettes meeting the Home Secretary of the time drafted in 300 policemen but Rose Yates continued with the meetings on Wimbledon Common to uphold her right of free speech. At the start of World War I the Wimbledon branch offices were converted into “Distress Kitchens” and shortly afterwards another soup kitchen was opened in Merton. |
