Notes / History | A rather unusual Maypole dance to celebrate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1897. Staff from Mitcham Lower School (now Benedict Primary) were supposed to decorate the pole, but had instead gone to London to see the Queen's parade. Pupils were therefore forced to dance around the bare pole! This event took place on land to the rear of Vestry Hall, and the Cricketers Inn. This area is now the site of the local Fire Station and War Memorial. |
