Notes / History | The South Eastern Federation of Art Societies sixth annual exhibition, which included Banstead, Carshalton, Ewell and Mitcham, was reported to have a “general air of vigour” by the Mitcham and Tooting Advertiser in 1958. The winner was a painting of daffodils picked by Lady Baker, who liked the painting so much that she bought it on the spot. R. F. Steele of the Mitcham Art Society received an award for his oil painting entitled “Cat among the Pigeons”. Another Mitcham artist called M Taylor also submitted two pictures “Still Life with Blue Tray” and “Still Life with China Animals”. A keen artist, R.F. Steele lived in Middle Road, Mitcham during the 1950s. He painted several panels for the front door of the nearby St.Olave's Church. These featured country scenes and attracted much interest from passersby. |
