Notes / History This photo was taken by Tom Francis who took many photographs recording Mitcham life from the 1890’s onwards. The Berkeley Teetotal Society was set up on the 1st June 1893 by Priscilla Pitt, a Quaker who lived with her husband George, a successful local draper who lived in Berkeley Cottage, Lower Mitcham.

The Teetotal Society was very popular and offered an attractive range of social activities including speakers and trips like this excursion to Brighton. The date of this trip is not known but the slogan on the banner declaring “900 strong in 2 years” suggests 1895 or soon after.
