Notes / History | Garden Party on Cricket Green, Mitcham 1911. Garden parties were popular during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Many were invitation only gatherings where the rich and respectable members of society could socialise. However, other events were open to the wider community, celebrating a local personality, or supporting a worthy cause. Refreshments often took the form of 'high tea', cucumber snandwiches, scones, cakes and light snacks, rather than stodgy foods. |
