Notes / History | The windmill on Wimbledon Common mid-19th century. From Medieval times “common waste” or the “lord’s waste” belonged to the lord of the manor. However the lord’s tenants had “common” rights over the ground, which prevented it from being sold as the private possession of one individual. In Tudor Wimbledon, the lord of the manor was Thomas Cecil, Earl of Exeter, from whom ownership descended to the Spencer family. |
