Notes / History | Walter de Merton was born in 1205 in Merton. He was educated at Merton Priory He was the lord chancellor of England, archdeacon of Bath, and founder of the Merton College in Oxford. During the first two years of Edward I’s reign, Walter was essentially the regent of England, whilst the king was away overseas. Walter died after a fall from his horse in 1277. He is buried in Rochester Cathedral. |
