Notes / History | John Carter from Mitcham, was a crew member of Captain George Vancouver's ship Discovery in 1793. The ship was exploring and surveying the coast of British Columbia. Carter and his shipmates landed in a cove and ate mussels off the rocks. They later became ill and Carter died. Later the bay was named after him. In 1957, a plaque and cairn was erected by the Canadian navy. Photographs of the event were sent to the Mayor of Mitcham by Rear Admiral H F Pullen. |
