Notes / History | The 1960's and '70s witnessed tremendous change in the social makeup of the population. Improved diet, healthcare and living conditions led to an increase in the average lifespan. The nature of family life was also changing; people moved further afield and for the first time, two-person households outnumbered those comprising extended kin. Separated from those relatives who had traditionally acted as carers in time of need, more elderly people sought accommodation in dedicated housing and rest homes. |
