Notes / History | This is the source of the River Wandle at Croydon. The river, which runs through the London Borough of Merton, is about 9 miles long and feeds into the Thames at Wandsworth. During the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it was one of the largest industrial rivers in Europe. It is said that at the beginning of the nineteenth century some 90 mills were at work on the river at one time. |
