Notes / History | For centuries, Wimbledon Common has been used for the riding and grazing of horses. During the 17th & 18th Centuries, there were even regular race meetings, with riders competing for prizes such as the ‘King’s Plate’. The Conservators have created designated horse-tracks and exercise rings, covering more then fifteen miles of the Common and are often gravel covered, to prevent erosion. Many local riding schools are located within a short distance of the Common, making regular use of the open ground for riding lessons, pony-trekking and horse-shows. The Wimbledon branch of the Pony-Club and the Kingston & District Riding Club also use the Common for Competitive sport. |
