Notes / History | This picture was taken during the rebuilding of Bluehouses Bridge in 1936. Tram Route 30 continued on to Willesden Junction via Putney. Note the fully enclosed tram, not open-top as earlier models had been. The tram network was extended to Mitcham in 1906, providing a cheap and relatively comfortable means of travelling between Mitcham and Croydon. At the time when this picture was taken much of the network was being decommissioned, to be replaced by trolleybuses and petrol-driven vehicles. During the 1940s, much of the disused track was removed and melted down as part of the wartime salvage effort. |
