Notes / History | Built on the former site of the Crown pub, Crown House was constructed by Bernard Sunley & Sons and dates from 1960. It originally housed commercial space and a postal sorting office. Caters supermarket was added to the forecourt area soon afterwards. Many local people still remember the triangular supermarket building, with its ornamental fountain in the foreground. The site was finally cleared in 1990 and the plot was used for a new extension to the Civic Centre, housing a council chamber, cafe and library. |
