Notes / History | Notice the small hand sickles, or 'mint hooks', used for harvesting the lavender. Local retailer and photgrapher, Tom Francis recalled selling these by the dozen and even received mail orders from Mitcham emigres living in Australia. Few growers remained in Mitcham, beyond the turn of the century. Many transferred their business elsewhere and the lavender fields were given over to market gardening. This picture was taken at 3pm on the 20th July 1904. |
