| Notes / History | This picture provides an interesting insight into contemporary catering and entertainment. Apparently the Devonshire could provide "Celebrated Steak Puddings," a "Cup of Tea Straight from the Pot," and "A Thorough Good Dinner Within the Means of Every Working Man." Notice the posters in the window advertising performances of "The Monk and The Woman" at Wimbledon Theatre and "On The Warpath" at King's Hall Picture Palace in Tooting. James Devonshire traded at 25 Abbey Parade in 1910, before he and his wife emigrated to Sydney, Australia in March 1911. The awnings were moved to 110 Haydons Road, Wimbledon, where John Friend and his wife Jane ran a coffee house and dining rooms, from 1911-1915. This row of shops was previously called 'The Pavement'. |
