| Notes / History | Alfred Ruff was a village boot and shoemaker during the Victorian period. His shop was situated at 9 Upper Green East and he also leased the adjoining No.11 to F. Woods, Tobacconist and confectioner. Alfred's son, Tom , was born in 1897 and continued to run the family firm after his father's death. A strong supporter of Mitcham Cricket Club, Tom captained the Wednesday XI for many years. Together with local cricketer and publican, Burnett Bullock, Tom helped to keep Mitcham cricket club going during the Second World War. In 1953 he also organised charity matches, including one where players dressed in the style of 1853. A shy and retiring man, Tom was an Alderman of Mitcham council and served as Mayor in 1961 and '62. He died whilst in office and is commemorated by a square stone memorial on the cricket green. The memorial was refurbished as part of a heritage lottery project run by Mitcham Cricket Green Community and Heritage. |
