Notes / History | The Morris & Co works along the River Wandle at Merton Abbey (Colliers Wood) produced a number of products. As well as tapestry, stained glass, silk cloth they also made furniture. All the furniture was hand made by skilled craftsmen. This picture shows just one of the chairs made at the Merton Abbey Works. Morris moved to Merton in 1881 taking over an existing premises. He retained the old buildings, renovating and adapting them as necessary. Morris & Co remained in Merton until it was wound up in 1940. |
