Notes / History Viscount Horatio Nelson lived in Merton between 1801 and 1805, sharing a property called Merton Place with Emma Hamilton and her husband Sir William Hamilton.

To commemorate this local association, and Nelson's prowess as a naval commander, Merton schoolchidren have traditionally raised special flags as a mark of respect on Trafalgar Day.
