Notes / History | A float entered by T.W. Palmer & Co (Merton Abbey) in support of the Mitcham Common Conservators, in a parade during the Coronation celebrations for Elizabeth II. The company started in Westminster in 1894, manufacturing and installing wire fencing, railings & gates. In 1901 they bought premises in Merton and the Merton Abbey Joinery works was founded. During the early 1950's there were campaigns against fly tipping and unauthorised dumping of municipal waste on Mitcham Common, including a mass gathering of Mitcham mothers pushing infants in prams. Strength of public feeling eventually brought this practice to a halt. |
