Notes / History The Wandle has flooded areas of Merton on several occasions, partly as a result of bad weather and rising water levels but also as a result of human intervention, such as building on flood-plains.
During the 1960s, Surrey County Council took a variety of flood alleviation measures, diverting the river flow, building culverts and in some instances, demolishing riverside buildings
Today the Environment Agency uses modern technology to control water levels in certain areas and also issues flood warnings to inform the public of impending danger.
