Notes / History | This photo was taken by Charles Matthews using a glass plate negative in about 1900. It shows the area of the Watermeads on the bank opposite Bennet’s Hole, which sits in a sharp curve on the Mitcham side of the river. Watermeads itself was once an area of meadows with clumps of trees but has become a ‘dense mass of wet woodlands’* since having been purchased by the National Trust in 1913. * River Wandle Companion: Bob Steel |
